Tradition Hilton Head may have set a new benchmark by featuring a LEED certified home as one of its first residences to be built. EP/A was selected to design the above-ground landscape according to LEED’s rigorous guidelines, as well as the subsurface bioretention cells, drainage systems, and rain gardens for on-site, stormwater runoff treatment and conservation. HGTV selected this project for its first Green Home series featuring practical ways to design and build an eco-friendly home. Native plants and drought tolerant species form the bulk of the planting palette. As added amenities for the homeowner a small organic vegetable garden, a patio with a bonfire pit, a vine-covered trellis, small lawn, and a courtyard entry garden were also included in the landscape plan. The HGTV Green Home collects rainwater from its roof in a specially designed underground cistern which ties into a separate irrigation system and will be dedicated especially for watering the vegetable garden. The project was awarded LEED Gold certification.
