Sea Pines - Ocean Front
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina
Since the footprint of the house occupies the majority of the property, the landscape in the remaining area offers subtle elements of small-scale delight through a carefully chosen palette of groundcovers, shrubs, screen planting, and a few specimen trees. Contrast in texture, form and color were the criteria for plant groupings to create an interesting sequence of discoveries. On the southeast side of the residence, the tabby walk leads to a small, open lawn area mounded on the beach side with a massing of ornamental grasses and specimen black pines. The pines help frame views to the ocean from the deck of the vanishing-edge pool and the private beach boardwalk. The path then splits the long and narrow garden space on the western side into flowering shrub beds along the house and evergreen screen planting along the property line. Midway, and enclosed in a low tabby wall, is a small grove of black bamboo, providing a backdrop to a rectangular reflecting pool between the main living quarters and the guest apartment.
